Today was a really good day! I found out that I am eligible for the Honors Program at the college I want to go to, I got almost all of my grades up, heck I even aced my Psych test! It all went down the drain when I got home. I'm not sure if some of you know, but I live in semi-rural Kansas (about 10 Miles outside a city of 380k lol) and we are allowed to have animals (not just dogs/cats, but chickens, horses, cows (LOL), etc) We have (had) 5 chickens... we also have 3 dogs (12 Y/O Newfoundland Black Lab mix, 8 Y/O Weimy and Black Lab mix, and a 1 Y/O Brown Lab and Border collie mix) I think you can tell where this is going :( When I get home after school, normally all of the chickens come to see me, and generally brighten up my day. The issue was that only 4 of them came up to me today... I would post pics of what I found, but it is too terrible to post (AKA graphic)... THE STUPID F**KING PUPPY KILLED MY FAVORITE CHICKEN... if it would've just had its neck broken, I would be angry but not homicidal angry. The poor chicken was torn LIMB FROM LIMB... Literally torn apart ;( GOD I AM JUST SO CONFLICTED OVER WHETHER TO BE REALLY ANGRY WITH THE FUCKING DOG OR JUST REALLY REALLY SAD...
This is basically what the chicken looked like...
PS don't comment saying that chickens are stupid or that I'm weird for having chickens (they're for eggs, not just pets) Also don't make jokes about Kansas.

As a Nebraskan, I am constantly the butt of "rides a horse/drives a tractor to school" jokes. I know that feel.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:04 |

That's rough, man.
I have a friend who also had a chicken coop. One year, he did an experiment where he injected the eggs with dye to see if the chicks would come out multi-colored. And they did! The dye wore off after a few weeks, though.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:04 |

It sucks right?
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:05 |

Also don't make jokes about Kansas.
Well, I was gonna make a wizard of Oz joke but I guess nevermind then.
Im really sorry, losing a pet at the hands of another pet is a horrible thing to happen
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:05 |

Sorry to hear about your chicken :( I prefer cats but I assume you feel just like I would if my cat died. Forgive the puppy for he knows not what he did.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:06 |

The problem is that we started out about 2.5 years ago with 10 baby chicks, out of the 6 that have died, only one was due to natural causes, and that was a HUGE staph infection that spread before we could take care of it... the dogs have killed all the other ones ;(
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:08 |
|
Yeah, and this is the first time she killed one of our animals... she's killed a raccoon, 2 skunks, a rabbit (cottontail), and like 10 turtles... I should've seen this coming damnit
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:09 |
|
dude, I've had chickens for eggs that turned into pets (and a gamecock, but that's a story for another day). One of them I house trained and taught it to come when I called it.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:09 |
|
Revenge... We had to get rid of our dog, because he kept killing my neighbors chickens... THAT kept getting on our property. Sorry for your losses, but I still can't stand chickens. I loved that damn dog. Also, these chickens were strictly pets, along with a turkey that would fucking attack. They even let them in their house...
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:09 |
|
Also, when I was in 2nd grade (around 10 years ago) the damn 12 Y/O dog killed our kitten three days after we found it in our yard ;( Damn come to think of it our dogs are effing vicious :(
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:09 |
|
I'm sorry
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:10 |

LOL I would love to do that, but the parents wouldn't allow it (foster care rules and shit)
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:10 |
|
Im ok with the skunks, BUT WHYD HE HAVE TO KILL PETER COTTONTAIL!?!
Actually I'd be careful with that, Rabbits have been carrying Tularemia lately
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:11 |
|
Oh... these are just hens that wander around the yard and normally they just hang around the bushes in our yard and the dogs just leave them alone... apparently this one wandered a little bit too close to the dog in question
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:12 |
|
That was about 6 months ago
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:13 |

Dang dude that sucks. Sorry that happend to your awesome animals. Dogs and chickens very rarely get along. Hopefully it doesn't happen again
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:13 |

These would go in front of the dogs and flutter and squak, so they were asking to die. You don't do that shit in front of a hound, no matter how small and innocent it looks.

![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:15 |

The weimy normally plays with the chickens (makes noises at them, they make noises back, basically talking to each other) however the other two normally chase the hens if they get the chance... come to think of it the chicken in question actually was grabbed by the same dog about 5 days ago ;( Foreshadowing I guess :(
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:17 |
|
LOL true enough! My parents said that the puppy wouldn't do this if we let the chickens free range with her out... FUCKING WRONG! The chickens will now be staying in the coop and pen 24/7 until they or the dogs die :/

Hell, I feel ya. As a Canadian, I'm expected to ride my dogsled or skidoo to work then commute home to my Igloo all whilst chugging maple syrup and Labatts.
I won't say I know how ya feel, but I have lost pets, so I can at least sympathize.
Maybe this'll cheer ya up.

I had some chickens that I raised for 4H when I was little.
They were really tame they come up and want to be petted when you sat down.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:19 |
|
the worst part is the dog probably had the best time ever and wouldn't understand why you'd be upset with it.
My grandparents used to have a problem with the neighbours dog barking and riling their chooks up, they got a couple of large ducks though and that sorted the dog out.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:19 |
|
These ones did the same for the most part... it is just really sad because I have known the chickens longer than that damn puppy has been alive... the chickens are basically my pets :)
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:21 |
|
We need a frickin goose! That would solve the problem! Actually I think my wails of agony and anger scared the shit out of the dog... she didn't come near me for the rest of the night lol

I'm partial to Ducks, I've never owned Chickens so no judging here.
I'm sorry for your loss.
I'm also a Dog guy. So..
A 12 year old NewfieLab? That is pretty awesome.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:23 |

Parents said no to ducks, and the Lab is old... I think he's going to kick the bucket pretty soon ;( He's weezing when he breathes in and out and I think he is suffering from arthritis... but he still goes for a swim pretty much every day!

Born and raised in Nebraska... Sadly my high school didn't help, since on the last day of class for seniors the guys would always drive things like 4-wheelers, lawn mowers (they would trailer them to a subdivision about a mile away and then drive the rest of the way), tractors and grain trucks.

My dog also killed one of mine. Before that I had 12. It wasn't agressive, but she was trying to herd them like border collies do and got too rough. Most of them are way past laying age but are still alive. I gave them to a lady who had a farm who fell in love with them cus they were so calm and she treats them as pets. They were so tame they were borderline stupid lol
I also had 2 guinea fowl, but I had to give them away because they would go in our neighbors' dog door and they would roost on their roof
I had ducks for a bit, but I gave them to my aunt who lives on the lake because I couldn't keep the pond clean fast enough

now I only have African pigme goats (a puppy ate everything small and feathery we had)
![]() 10/07/2014 at 00:27 |

Well, this one catches them and plucks the feathers out... and she "accidentally" ripped one of the chickens legs off :( I really don't want to see that sort of thing ever again...

:( substitute "we had" with "I loved" and it would be my life story ;)

I live in idaho, so I know the stuff like that, everyone thinks you grow potatoes when actually the nearest potato farming is like 200 miles away, and so many people think idaho is in the Midwest, which it's not. And that it is full of white racists, It's not. And that there are a lot of Mormons, which that stereotype is actually true, I live in northern idaho, so not even the more Mormony (is that a word?) and there are like 5 Mormon churches in my town of 25,000 people.

we had a skunk in our backyard about a week ago and it sprayed, and the house still smells.

To be fair, dogs for the most part, are predators/hunters. They don't usually go on murder sprees like cats, but they like to kill.
P.S. I'm from Alabama, I know your small town pain, but not your flatness. Or didn't know your flatness, until I moved (relocated by force) to Florida. You don't have the only crazy parents of Oppo. Long story, or not really.

So Texas jokes are still fair game though right? Also I'm from Central PA and I know a number of people around me have chickens.

You raise Barred Rocks? Nice.
...one time we went out in the morning and found that a rabid racoon had gotten into the coop overnight. It was not a pretty site. The coon was still in there too. Had to kill it with a '22, and had to put down the survivors as well.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 01:23 |
|
Yep :( down to 2 left now... and one has a giant hole about 3 inches in diameter and about an inch deep in her back from an encounter with the same dog :( The one that died was the only one not to have an encounter with the dogs yet
![]() 10/07/2014 at 01:41 |

Might want to look into getting a rooster. Barred rocks are generally incredibly docile but the roosters are just as protective as other breeds and he will make the dogs think twice about going after the hens.
Some Rhode Island Reds might benefit the flock too. They're very smart birds and they don't take sh!t from no-one.

It's interesting. My Roman Tufted is scared of my little dog, but when the neighbors larger dog comes onto the land it's all "this is *my* land" and it runs away.
Pilgrims and Roman Tufted's are the least aggressive, so are nicer to have around. But there are days when I want me a Watch Goose to handle the hippies, pigs and strangers.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 01:46 |

We've trained our dog to understand the difference between "our" chickens and "wild" chickens. It took a while, but now it just lays down and watches as the chickens do their thing. When a wild one shows up, we just say "go get it" and it either leaves the land, dies, or gets stuck in some tall grass with the dog harrying it.
![]() 10/07/2014 at 01:48 |

By the way, there is a breed of duck that 1) makes eggs that are close to chicken flavor, though not perfect and 2) has shit that is less stinky, like Moscovy's. Pretty cool to have around if you have slugs or other soil vermin.

Used to have 3 chickens. One looked almost identical to the picture. One was reddish-brown and the third was black. One night an opossum forced its way into the coop and slaughtered all three. One was still (barely) alive when we found them in the morning. It was terrible to see, and me being only 11 or 12 at the time my father had to kill the one that was still alive. It was a horrible experience, but at the end of the day it is just the circle of life, and predators will be predators. The dog is young and just doing what instinct tells him/her. Training around the chickens and segregation when you are not there should help in the future. As much as it sucks try not to be too mad at your dog.

Nooooooo! Poor chicken. :o(
![]() 10/07/2014 at 03:54 |

That sucks man. My friends have chickens and they ended up getting a few more hatchlings a few months back. Either the feral cat that has adopted them killed 2 out of the 5 or a raccoon was the culprit, 2 more were killed by their hens and the only one to survive was the rooster they didn't want.
I couldn't have my dog around chickens, she'd go prey crazy. Anything on the ground is pretty much fair game to her. I guess you can take a feral dog into your house, but those street smarts never leave. I can't let her off leash in a park because shed just run away and try to hunt the lizards snakes and squirrels.
Some dogs just like to kill other animals because they don't know any better. My mom lost many dogs growing up on the farm because they got into the hen house. My grandpa didn't take kindly to the dogs fucking with his breakfast let alone the other 11 mouths he had to feed.
Long comment...
TL;DR: sorry about your chickens, but congrats on all your other stuff. Honors society clubs in college are pretty key on figuring out how to pass some courses with an A. It's all about networking.

I had chickens and turkeys growing up
, and I own a parrot now... Frankly I still miss the chickens. Chickens are great animals when raised with a gentle hand. They're friendly, curious, fluffy, and I love the smell of their feathers... no, they aren't the smartest things to ever walk the earth, but they aren't as dumb as people think and you're so right about how they "generally brighten up the place"... I totally understand.

I use to have chickens. And it was never fun coming out to the yard and seeing feathers strung about thanks to the skunks/hawks... Anyways it will be alright. Its hard getting dogs to adjust to animals like chickens. It can be done, our boxers took a while to adjust to them, but it takes time, patience, and supervision unfortunately. Here is a pic of one of our chickens, which is probably the same as yours.
